VACNO®
VACNO® is
formed by covalently attaching numerous caged nitric oxide, CNO,
molecules to each human albumin molecule to produce an antioxidant
product that will be compartmentalized within blood vessels. SynZyme
is developing VACNO® as a vascular- and neuro-protective
agent. One of the major therapeutic markets for VACNO® is
stroke, and the initial indication for VACNO® development
will be its conjunctive use with t-PA for the treatment of stroke
and heart attack. The known benefit of hemo-dilution and neuro-protection
by albumin in the reduction of mortality and morbidity after stroke
will be further enhanced by the anti-inflammatory activities of the
covalently attached CNO.
Pre-clinical efficacy data show that VACNO® can be used
in several types of strokes. Its ability to enhance blood flow will
be beneficial in treating patients suffering transient ischemic
attacks. VACNO®'s neuro-protective function, especially
with regard to its ability to block hemoglobin-induced neurotoxicity,
will help hemorrhagic stroke patients. VACNO®'s ability
to protect blood vessel integrity, when used in conjunction with
t-PA, will greatly increase the number of patients who can benefit
from t-PA treatment. SynZyme plans to pursue an extension of the
t-PA treatment window as its first VACNO® indication.
VACNO®'s neuro-protective function could potentially can
be expend to the protection of the brain in cases of traumatic head
trauma application.
Pre-clinical efficacy data also show that VACNO® is
efficacious in the prevention of sub acute vaso- occlusive occlusion
in animal models of sickle cell disease.
